It is the indians, not the arrows…

This is what my first golf instructor told me. I was all excited about buying new clubs. He told me that it was much more important to improve my swing. Equipment and technology help gain a few yards but definitely improving the swing has much more impact in your game. A friend of mine that has been playing golf for many years uses a simple set of clubs with two real woods 3 & 5 and very old irons. He beats me all the time and his balls flight straighter and longer than mine. It is the Indians, not the arrows  a.k.a. it is the golfer, not the clubs. Take a look at his equipment.

Golfer Elbow

In a previous blog I talked about how to protect your lower back from the strain the golf swing puts on it. A joint that suffers frequently when playing golf is the elbow. You need to protect it too by strengthening the muscles around it. If you get pain there are also  excercises to help you recover. Definitely being in good health and with strong muscles help you enjoy the game more. During the off season I go to the gym more often than in the warmer months. After all there is no much to do outside unless you like winter sports. I take advantage of this period away from golf to prepare the muscles that will produce the golf swing, especially the lower body: hamstrings, hips, quadriceps. Also it helps guard the knees, which is another fragile joint. I will talk about it in my next blog.

Club Distances

Among new players, one of the most frequently asked question is how long you are supposed to hit your clubs. All depends on things like the club you use, the ball, the wind, where you hit from: (fairway, rough, tee, etc), the temperature, your flexibility, your stiffness or lack of it thereof and most importantly how solidly you hit the ball and at what speed. Also whether you hit straight, a fade (left to right) or a draw (right to left).

Distances vary from one golfer to another. It is not too important to hit very far. It is more important to know how far YOU can hit the ball with each club. By playing golf you’ll find out if you are a long or a short hitter but more importantly you will know what club to use in each situation. You will also find out that the distances at the driving range are different from the distances at the golf course. The driving range is a controlled, fabricated environment. You are better off playing 9 holes than hitting a bucket of balls.

I found the below table with referential distances (in yards) for short hitters, mid hitters and long hitters.

Golf is special

Golf is a very special sport. It is as mental as it is physical. It requires a set of skills that you do not need in other sports. Athletes of all walks of life have tried to play golf with different results. John Elway, Michael Jordan, Sugar Ray Leonard and more recently Michael Phelps. The latter said that playing golf is the most difficult thing he has ever done. He cannot comprehend how hitting a small ball with a stick can be so complicated. To my point, special mechanics + mental state make it not easy. Plus, you have to really like it, in order to stay on course and to absorve knowledge and perfect the movements to improve your game.
